This Mercedes-Benz 290GD (W461) is a rugged, utilitarian variant of the G-Class, which is reportedly ex-army. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.9-litre ‘OM602 D29’ inline-five diesel engine, producing around 70kW and 192 Nm of torque, with selectable four-wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission with overdrive. According to LastVIN, it was originally ordered to the Netherlands, and G-Mercedes LLC, Utah, USA, note that they acquired the car directly from the Dutch military. The odometer shows 5,712 km, but this is not warranted.
EQUIPMENT & FEATURES This 290 GD is finished in Matte Bronze Green with a black bonnet and trim accents, over a green vinyl interior with a black dashboard. It rides on 16-inch body-coloured wheels with black Mercedes-Benz emblems, wrapped in Toyo M/T Open Country tyres. Equipment includes a steering guard, protective light grilles, a snorkel-type air intake, a rear spare wheel carrier, locking rear differentials, a heated rear window, and a roof rack featuring a rear access ladder and mounted shovel. The car has been comprehensively upgraded, including the installation of a custom-made diesel pump and turbocharger kit. The cooling system has been uprated with an aluminium radiator, a bespoke roof rack and ladder, and larger tyres mounted to the original 16-inch steel wheels. One ignition key will be supplied. UPDATES We suspect that the engine was replaced during prior army ownership; it has been resprayed and re-trimmed as part of the restoration. SERVICE HISTORY The vehicle’s most recent service was completed in May 2025 at around 5,000 km, and it has been driven sparingly since. SUMMARY The Mercedes-Benz 290 GD is a highly regarded military-derived off-roader, celebrated for its legendary robustness, go-anywhere capability, and utilitarian charm. Reportedly benefiting from a respray and re-trim, it would make a characterful addition to any military-themed collection, or a dependable companion for off-road adventures.
